Most editors theme the editor and leave the chrome alone. A Dune theme also styles the window frame, sidebars, tabs, floating cards, the status bar and the chat, with hundreds of tokens that are documented and validated.
Run Preferences: Color Theme and arrow through the list. The whole window restyles as you move, so you see the real thing, not a swatch.
Switching themes guideDune ships two families. Desert is warm sand and dusty sky, from soft to deep, plus a light variant. Dessert is candy pastels on berry ink. Every one is a complete theme: editor, syntax and chrome.
- Desert: Dune Desert, Desert Soft, Desert Deep, Desert Light
- Dessert: Dessert, Dessert Light, Dessert Dark, Dessert Truffle
- Plus Space Optimal
On top of the VS Code color keys, Dune themes set semantic chrome tokens (surfaces, accents, borders) and geometry tokens like radius and floating-card styling. Missing keys are derived, so a short theme still looks finished.
- 54 semantic color tokens, 28 derived, 206 geometry and decoration tokens
- A JSON schema gives you autocomplete and validation while you write
- A bundled TextMate grammar pack gives every theme fine-grained syntax colors
Any VS Code color theme from Open VSX installs and works as-is. Dune fills in the chrome from its colors, so even a theme that knows nothing about Dune styles the whole window.
